Review: (Video review here)

This novel is a fantastic start to a series, which is right up my street. It has all one could expect from a Paranormal Romance story. The order in which Lexi presents the rules and limitations of the societies and the introduction of the characters in them keeps one in high suspense. The unexpectedly desired heroine becomes a complication for the irresistible billionaire playboy when their connection is unwilling to be broken despite its costs. As the heroine Stas loses friends and her freedom she decides to fight against evil and the very forces that have been viewed as her family, she decides to work as a double agent. This is an intriguing twist where the reader is indulged by the torturing feelings of Isaac’s worry and lack of respect as he bends every rule of the species’ treaty to keep Stas safe. Isaac and Stas’ bond and banter is invigorating and embed the reader in a feel-good flirtation play. This is a very enjoyable read that I highly recommend to any romantic person searching for a sore heart.

Award Scoring

Message & Moral

4 points

The message is about fighting for true love despite any social pressure to be parted. This is a common and ever so delicious plot line in Paranormal Romance and the reason it is my favourite genre. It also has an essence of teamwork and loyalty where some of the characters have to burry their hatchets to overcome the evilness threatening them. This mature moral where someone has to be the bigger person, even if it is reluctantly, encourages the benefits of being brave.

Creatures & Environment

5 points

The world she has created of supernaturals is fascinating and instead of using the traditional vampires and werewolves, she has invented an entire set of her own creatures. This element is interesting as it is not obvious as to how they will react or what ability they possess. All the characters have different abilities that spin and twist the plot around in ways that are unexpected for the reader and tricky to overcome for the hero. The fact that the heroine is stubborn and has her own strong will doesn’t help him and is yet another amusing factor of their relationship.

Captivation & Continuity

5 points

It immediately captivates you as it starts with the murder of a dear friend of Stas. She meets Isaac, who you learn is surprised with the fact that she can see him although in general no one should. Already here, I knew I would not put this story down. The murder then goes on to reveal supernatural signs as the cause of the death as inspected by the two at the scene. The description of the science and the characters is made clear and the adjectives Lexi uses to describe someone’s way of being is very imaginative and fresh.

Language & Flow

4 points

The language is vibrant and slang and foul language is often used to portray the characters. It gives them life and in some cases, like Baltazor, it makes you want to wash his mouth with soap, or secretly hide him away in your bedroom. Lexi writes with an easy flow where you are indulged into the story rather than having to read some paragraphs twice because the author wants to impress. The way she also makes the characters’ internal dialogue in italics adds an extra sense of understanding what goes on in the peoples’ minds.
