A love story between two people who live in two very different worlds; is it right to keep a promise when it hurts the one you love? Can the darkness survive in the light?
Mare’s life is in danger. An unknown enemy seeks to destroy her, only months after her mother’s brutal death. When a handsome stranger saves her life everything she has ever known will be put to the test. Dare she trust her life – and her heart – with a man who walks the endless night?
Andre stumbles upon Mare’s attack, saving her life, immediately drawn to the innocent beauty. Cursed and soulless, his existence has never meant so much or brought him so close to salvation. His dark promise, hidden in the deep recesses of his heart, becomes his only objective. Can he save Mare in time? Or will he be lost, forever damned, in his pursuit to have her at any cost? Can love survive the impossible?
Review: (Video review)
Mare is beautiful and innocent but her life has changed so much since her mother’s death. Not only is it filled with immense grief, but she has also started to receive death threats. The people who murdered Mare’s mother want to clean up any mess that could possibly link them to any crimes. However Andre, a vampire nobility, has other desires for Mare than for her to fall victim of the Boraggio mafia family’s doings. What starts off as a call to protect an innocent, turns into a strange emotional pull and then into a full-blown infatuation. His soul becomes obsessed with anything Mare, and he has to fight his hardest to keep his dark promise. This is what I would call a pure romance indulgence. Nikki Landis seems to know exactly what a woman wants in a romance and how she wants to be courted before sex. Crawl under the duvet, be alone and just enjoy this romantic ecstasy for pure pleasure.
Message & Moral
Should you stay with the woman you love even if you know that it will hurt her in the end? Should you be selfish and let your love flourish, even though it will be to the detriment of the one you love? Is it better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all? These are the questions that Andre faces when he engages with Mare. Forbidden love can be defeated, but should you break a promise by doing it? This book is filled with heartbreaking dilemmas and your heart will ache for Andre and Mare in the hope that they will overcome all odds to be together.
Creatures & Environment
Nikki Landis has a way of really explaining Andre’s struggles and refers to him as the man and the monster. This perfectly illustrates the internal suffering he feels as he knows of his vampire nature, but also his past human form. Mare’s behaviour is also well explained with how she envelopes herself in self-pity after having lost people dear to her. The characters are key to this Paranormal Romance; they make the story. Whatever issues go on in the background add to the story, but I could have read about Andre’s and Mare’s relationship only, no matter what other plot developed throughout the pages.
Captivation and Continuity
Mare is chased by people who want to murder her. Andre is at her heel protecting her. It is a game of power and control that Andre wants and needs to win in order to protect the only woman who has made him experience feelings he never thought would resurface. With murderers around the corner to threaten Mare and her brother Michael, the story makes you feel on edge. At the same time as Mare’s and Andre’s relationship is toing and froing, your interest increases as to whether or not they will end up together. The story leaves the reader in the middle of a critical moment where you absolutely feel the need to carry on reading the series. As it is a dark romance it is not clear how it will finish…
Language & Flow
I liked Nikki Landis’ writing style as she hit the nail on the head with regards to inner conflict and the romantic need to satisfy the lovesick monster within Andre. It is written from both Mare’s and Andre’s points of view, which makes it extra interesting. You get to find out how both of them are feeling about the same situation and how they love each other in their own unique way.
